The site of St. Marcellin (STM) is part of our Thermal Ceramics business and produces ceramic fibre and different types of products such as Fobre, Blankets, Technical Fibre, Felt and Pyro Mopdules. Our products are mainly used where high performance thermal insulation in environments with temperatures from 500 and 1600°C is required. The production has 4 ovens which produce around 20.000 tons of fibre per year operating 24/7 365 days/year with around 190 employees.
What is the local area like?
Saint-Marcellin-en-Forez is a very small city (~4.500 inhabitants) situated 20 km from Saint Etienne (~170.000 inhabitants). Situated on the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, on the east-central part of France, the city has plenty of nice areas for hiking, relatively close skiing areas and is only three hours away from the south coast.
Lyon, the third-largest city of France, is only one-hour drive away, or 45 min with the train. A few other nice cities around are: Grenoble (2h by car), Clermont-Ferrand (1h30 by car) and Le-Puy-en-Velay (1h by car).
Getting to the site by public transportation is not easy, since the bus line (http://www.loire.fr/upload/docs/application/pdf/2016-07/lr_120_2016_web.pdf) has a limited time table (especially on school holidays!). So the best option is buying a car.
The nearest train station is Saint-Etienne Châteaucreux. Also very important and useful is the train station Lyon Part-Dieu, which has a very good connection with the main cities of France.
In Saint-Etienne there is also an airport, but it has very few flights. The best option is Lyon Saint-Exupéry.
Where can I find somewhere to live?
Depending on the style of city life that you are looking for, there are a few possibilities:
- Saint-Marcellin-en-Forez: very quiet town, maybe walking distance to the company, rent low
- Montbrison, Andrézieux: quiet towns, 10-15 min by car, rend low/medium
- Saint-Etienne: relatively busy city, 25 min by car, rent medium
- Lyon: busy (and awesome) city, at least 1 hour, rent expensive (maybe similar to St-Etienne, depending on the area)
A good website to look for apartments and house shares is: www.leboncoin.fr.
If hitting the road for two hours every day is not a problem, then our current graduates would definitely recommend finding a house share in Lyon.
